August 26 of this year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Lothar Fieg Sr. in Oneonta, N.Y. Lothar and his wife, the former Florence Shields, were the parents of seven children: Emilie, Florence, Maxine, Lothar Jr., Franklin, Victor Philip and Dorothy.
Lothar was born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1886, and emigrated to America with his family when he was a teenager. He established a successful home-building enterprise in Oneonta in 1920, two years after arriving in Oneonta. His company was also instrumental in the creation of the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown, dismantling three historic buildings in the area and reassembling them on the site of the museum.
Not only was Lothar a builder, he also was a very civic-minded citizen, serving on Oneonta's Public Service Board, eventually becoming its chairman.
Upon his death, Oneonta's mayor ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at City Hall..
